wang shu - architecture on zhongshan st

if you are searching for contemporary architecture in china i will suggest works by wang shu. he practices in hangzhou and is the prizker prize 2012 laureate. while i was in china i had the opportunity to see some of his works, namely the chinese academy of art and zhongshan st.

in particular, this photo dump / post is of a project situated in the historical area of hangzhou. the area contains markets, boutiques and restaurants, and many examples of traditional architecture. zhongshan st is located around this area, and was formerly a road that has recently gone through a renovation (urban regeneration to use a architect-y term) through converting a traffic passageway to a pedestrian only way. the project was carried out in between 2007 to 2009. It is unsure/unclear who did what part of the buildings or the design of the road, and i would say that it is unlikely that this is a solo project by wang shu. i also was told that there was little documentation on the project in books and also on the internet (i might be wrong on this though). the photos after the break are of zhongshan st and various buildings along the street especially the ones believed to have been designed by wang shu('s firm). the buildings i think were designed by him has the typical interesting use of materials, layering of tiles and wood that is typical of his work. in particular, a small house jutting out on top of some buildings, a bamboo structure named the exhibition hall of the imperial street of the southern song dynasty, and a weird gate made out of tiles and concrete, which i am very unsure as to what the structure really is for. the last three photos are before and after photos inside the exhibition hall, which i have included as it is very interesting to show how much the street has changed. the hall istelf also contains documentation, maps, and architectural model of the project.

shanghai travelogue part 2

This post will have at least some explanations of the pictures. I chucked all the photos in at once on the last post forgetting that blogger has crappy formatting of photos with captions, well in the compose window anyway

Arrived at pudong international airport at 2 am. Taxi driver decides to take us through a scenic route of first day in shanghai, slowing down at lupu bridge where the expo site formally was then driving around the bund area. hit the hotel at 3am and sleep on rock hard beds.

This area is a quiet area. the church and surrounds are notable, only because in 1 hour of walking around in this place you will see at least 5 couples taking wedding photos.

in the shanghai planning exhibition (every major city in china has one of those planning exhibition buildings if i'm not wrong) there is a massive model of the shanghai metro. i should have noted what scale the model is, because i don't know, however the majority of architectural display models in china are at funny scales (1:150, 1:300 etc) these models of these types are not aimed at architects/planners but at the general public

expo site area. the model lights up and crap like that.

the reason why i'm in the planning exhibition hall and generally in china was because of a university unit studying modern chinese architecture

Needs to Make a Pointless Point...Right Now! or The Death of Hopeless Romantical Rachel

I've realised that so far, the blog this year has not got posts pertaining to:

1. Mention of personal graphic projects
2. Photography of recent events eg photoblogs
3. Very badly written poems on emotional topics that pose as captions for emotionally dark photographs

This is unfortunately due to the fact that have read a lot of intellectual material as of recently which dulls my interest into making such blog posts. Since I do not intend on making blog posts of this type ever again, my life has therefore lost direction and purpose, and now I need to find a new purpose for my life. Oh fawk.

Troll-lol-lol-ing

As I said before I was forced to drive around houses to go caroling, and that was yesterday. I went in a group of ten people. There was a pastor to talk about Jesus, and two people to play guitars, and the rest singing. Oh, and there was a angel to 'spread the good news' and proclaim the birth of Jesus. Unfortunately, that job was given to me.

At 6pm I arrived at the church, with everyone jamming on guitars, which wasn't good for my ears.

Then we poor carolers set out to the first house (while the Bed Intruder song was on repeat), and had a family of grandparents, parents and kids over for Christmas Eve dinner. We sung in the cramped (and very warm) lounge room, and we were given presents (ie generic box of chocolates), pandan cake and juice upon completion of singing.

The next house had lots of bottles of Guinness lying around and a person called Doris who I somewhat didn't know. And after completion of singing, we got dinner, which had to be rather quick since we had to dash to the next house.

So I didn't really eat my share, and my hands were still rather sticky from handling some eggs while I was gripping the steering wheel. Poor pastor got lost on the way and started going around circles in Forest Lakes. Even with me knowing the area very well, I still followed the pastor around in his car like a lost sheep and I wanted to yell at him for going the wrong way. But that wasn't the worse.

When we got on to Roe Highway (finally) the pastor took a wrong turn and continued on to the freeway, while I missed a turn and drove to the airport instead*. The car containing the boys however had my brother in it, aka the family GPS. So they got to the next house ages before me or pastor got there.

So after we finished the caroling session, which was at Jon's place by the way, we didn't get any presents, but we got Jon leading a mini worship session and us singing Yahweh and Came to My Rescue like the good old times at youth. After that however, we played Jon's favorite game, which was Taboo.

You can tell Jon loves this game, because he keeps on quoting his two unfortunate friends, Derek and Frame, and how they make a great team together. He loves to quote Frame especially, because of his rather incomplete English vocabulary and one of his attempts to describe the word 'Transformers' (which went something like this: 'Movie! Movie! You watch it!').

But when you play Taboo with Derek, Frame, and Jon, you know you have a great team, because the three combined are bound to say something ridiculous such as:

FL: It's a movie...you got...
Jon: LAID!

After some people had to leave, I stayed to watch people chat about HTC Desires and P plates, and then I went home.

*No seriously, there are three very confusing roundabouts on the turnoff from Karel Avenue. If you tell me to drive to Jon's house I will probably turn to the airport instead. I bet if you let James May loose there he will never ever get out for eternity.
